ABOUT THE PROJECT

Small Talk Opera is a single-channel moving image installation that explores meaning through the language of small talk as a unique and vital form of communication that helps to provide a foundation for the future possibilities of deeper conversations and connections. Small Talk Opera examines small talk’s ability to employ speech of social bonding rather than communication through information exchange as it negotiates and defines a relationship taking a role of a vital social mediator. The work is a collaboration between new media artist Evgenia Mikhaylova and Saskatoon Opera.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Evgenia is a Russian/Canadian interdisciplinary artist working in installation, video, sound, drawing and performance. Her work examines the complexities of perception, communication systems, language and epistemology through interdisciplinary research-based practice that investigates parallels between the ways we experience the world through our senses, and the ways we interpret the knowledge we acquire. The research extends into an exploration of various communication eco-systems: physical, speculative and theory-based as well as their interconnectedness to language and sensory perception. Through the interdisciplinary practice, the work mediates between connecting, deconstructing and understanding how the proposed perceptual framework shapes our relationships with each other and the world around us.

This installation features singing from Spencer McKnight, tenor and Chelsea Mahan, soprano.
