Kieran Foss and Kathy Gable are delighted to bring one of Franz Schubert’s most beloved works to the Saskatoon stage! Die Schöne Müllerin (The Beautiful Miller’s Daughter) recounts a dramatic tale about unrequited love and teenage heartbreak that transcends time and geography to deliver a genuinely human narrative. Composed in early 19 th -century Vienna to poetry by Wilhelm Müller, Schubert’s song cycle tells the story of a boy on the verge of manhood, faced with the excitement and anxiety that comes from seeking one’s own path in the world. After befriending a stream that leads him to a mill, the boy meets and becomes infatuated with the miller’s daughter. His obsession, in conjunction with the miller maid’s favour for a hunter, precipitates a downward spiral that culminates in a fatal conclusion, satisfying the contemporaneous Viennese fascination with mortality. Decades before Sigmund Freud posited his theories of psychoanalysis, Schubert’s music explores the psychological anguish of unrequited adolescent love and the mental health crisis it can cause in away that is deeply authentic and is as relatable today as it was when it was first heard 199 years ago!
